End of Semester Reflection
Hey Y'all!
As the semester comes to an end, I have been looking back at the work I completed throughout the year. Reading my older blog posts reminded me of a time when my health felt stable and my routines felt predictable. Those entries stand in contrast to the more recent months that documented repeated medical appointments, ongoing symptoms and long periods of uncertainty. Revisiting the full year has been difficult, but it also highlights the determination it took to reach this point in the academic calendar.
My health took a significant turn this semester. In the past week alone, I completed eight tests. The first set of results showed that my esophagus is beginning to deteriorate because my stomach is not able to hold acid in place. The acid moves into the esophagus and causes pain, burning, disrupted sleep and difficulty eating. More results are expected and I am preparing for the possibility of additional treatment steps once everything is evaluated.
These findings require major changes to my daily life. I can no longer consume caffeine, juice, dairy, red meat, red sauces or chocolate. There are a few other restrictions that may be added as my doctors gather more information. I will continue maintaining a gluten-free diet, which has already been part of my routine for years because of celiac disease. Even though these adjustments are challenging, I understand the importance of protecting my body and reducing the damage caused by recurring acid exposure.
I also received a thyroid ultrasound this week to check for cysts or nodules that may be contributing to my symptoms. I am still waiting for a full assessment. Although this process can feel overwhelming, I am grateful for the team of doctors who have been thorough, consistent and supportive. They have approached each symptom with attention and care, which has helped me stay grounded during a semester that has often felt unpredictable.
Reaching the end of the semester required the support of many people across campus and at home. My professors provided understanding during weeks when I could not speak, attend class or complete assignments in the typical way. My advisor checked in regularly and helped me stay organized. My classmates and friends stepped in when I needed assistance, and my family helped me navigate the emotional weight that came with each new medical update. Their support made completing the term possible.
These blogs have become an important part of that support system as well. I am grateful for the way they have grown into a journal for me. They became a place where I could write honestly about my emotions without fear of judgment. They allowed me to process what I was experiencing in real time and offered a space where my thoughts could exist freely. Thank you, Aggie, for giving me that space and for encouraging reflection that felt safe and meaningful during a challenging semester.
Attending a small university has also shaped this experience in a positive way. The size of this community creates an environment where faculty and staff know students individually and respond to their needs in a personal and meaningful way. This structure allowed me to build connections with mentors and educators who were willing to help me manage the balance between academics and long-term health concerns. It reinforced why I value this institution and why I am grateful I chose a campus located far from large cities but grounded in strong community support.
As I prepare for the next steps, my focus is on long-term health, continued communication with my doctors and adjusting to the lifestyle changes that are now necessary. I plan to complete any remaining tests, follow each recommendation I receive and stay committed to the changes that will support healing. I will also continue writing about this process because reflecting through writing has helped me understand the challenges and progress that shape each stage of this journey.
Thank you to everyone who has continued reading these posts, checked in throughout the semester and offered support during the difficult moments. Your encouragement has helped create a sense of connection that made this period easier to navigate.
That's all for now!
XOXO, Mia Ann
