On the Other Side of Recruitment Week
Hey y’all, it’s me again!
It is officially sorority recruitment week here and this year feels different in the best way. For the first time I am on the other side of recruitment. Instead of being with my chapter during the week I am serving as a Rho Gamma, which means I get to guide potential new members through the process.
Being a Rho Gamma is such a unique role. I am here to answer questions, calm nerves and basically be a support system for anyone going through recruitment for the first time. The hardest part though is that we are completely disaffiliated from our own chapters during the week. That means I do not wear my letters, I do not go to my chapter’s events and I cannot talk about my own experience until after recruitment is over. It makes sense because the goal is to give unbiased advice to the women who are trying to find the chapter that feels like home to them. Still, it is a little strange to be away from my sisters, especially during such an exciting time.
Tonight is the first round and there is always so much energy in the air. The rounds continue all week leading up to Saturday. Then comes my favorite day, bid day on Sunday! Bid day has always been one of my favorite moments in Greek life. The excitement, the cheering, the pure joy of seeing everyone find their place just makes my heart so happy. This year will be even more special because I get to watch it unfold from a different perspective.
Greek life has been such an important part of my college experience. It has given me leadership opportunities, friendships I will carry with me long after graduation and memories that still make me smile when I think about them. Being part of a sorority has shaped so much of my time here and I am grateful for it every single day. That is why I hope the freshmen going through recruitment this week get the same experience. I want them to find their people, to grow into leaders and to feel like they have a second home just like I did.
I know this week will be long and busy, but it will also be rewarding. I cannot wait to see where everyone ends up and to celebrate all the new members on bid day. It is moments like these that remind me how special Greek life really is.
That is all for now. Wish me luck this week!
XOXO,
Mia Ann
